You're funny. I am FROM NY and live in the DFW area now. FYI Sonic has a new "sandwich" now. Its like a frito pie rolled up in a tortilla. A little too greasy for me!!

Being from Texas I LOVE frito pie. Now I live in yankee territory and these folks think I am nuts! I told them there is no such thing as a concession stand at little league baseball without frito pie! You can take the girl out of Texas but you can't take Texas out of the girl! As soon as my house sells, back to Houston I go!

Great idea. Tho I seem to recall having to get a food handlers certificate when you sell food. Another thing--I dont think you should get into charging .25 for cheese, etc. That will get too complicated. And if you just charge for admittance, then you wouldnt have to worry about selling food, etc. Definitely go to your local businesses and ask for donated prizes and/or money. We had chili dogs, frito pie at our bingo night and everyone really liked it!

Great idea and a somewhat simple money maker! We just had ours which was sponsored by the Student Council. They asked the school community for competitors, charged about $2 for two bowls, crackers and a bottle of water. The judges were visiting SACS members (our accrediting association) plus our superintendent. The "prize" was a giant chili pepper trophy, made from paper mache. The only cost were bowls, spoons, napkins, and water. Each contributor brought their chili up in crock-pots. We even had the 3rd grade enter a very-spicy curry chili (the teacher is an Aussie) and they were complete with homemade chef hats and aprons. Great class spirit and they took 2nd place. Ours took place at lunch time, parents came from work for lunch, so it wasn't a long event. You might want to combine it with another activity (talent show, science fair). Good luck!

We just finished our fall fundraiser and did real well, but feel we need to continue raising money for unforseen things. With winter on its way, I thought a chili cook-off family night would be fun to do. Has anyone ever done one? I thought about having 1 or 2 parents from each classroom to volunteer to make their favorite chili recipe. We could charge $2/person (5 & under free) and they could go around taste testing. The $2 buy a bowl of chili w/crackers or corn chips & a drink (.25 extra for cheese). The winner of the cook-off would receive some type of donated prize. Any thoughts on this idea?
