Book adoption

We have a Birthday Book Club at our school. Parents can donate $5.00-$20.00 to the PTA and we purchase a book for the Library and inside the front cover there is a dedication in the child's name & birthday.

We do something like this with Scholastic Book Fairs. We have 2 book fairs a year, one in the Fall & one in the Spring. Each Teacher and the Librarian has a wish list of books they would like. Parents then buy them for the classrooms or library. They get a sticker inside that says who the book is donated by.

Last year we still did the wish lists, but we also offered book gift certificates. They came in $5 denominations and parents could just allot an amount to the library or their child's classroom. Again they get a sticker inside the front cover noting who donated the book.

Scholastic has also been wonderful in giving us books.

That sounds like a great idea! We did this at church once for hymn books. It went well. If you could get it on the web site like you mentioned that would keep more than one family adopting a book! I have also done this in my son's memory. He was a baby when he passed away and we get books for the library about angels.

If you have one like this I wouldn't mind adopting it for your school! Let me know!

Our k-5 school has had some serious budget cuts this year. Our PTO is anticipating that most of our budget will go to helping buy basic supplies for the students and a couple of small beautification projects.

However, our library needs some help as well. Normally they do a couple book sales throughout the year to make money to buy new books for the library. This has always been done by the librarian and aides. However, this year there are no aides, because those positions were cut due to budget constraints.

I would like to approach PTO to help out. My idea is that the librarian can put together a list of books that she would like to purchase, as well as approximate cost. Each family can choose to "adopt" a book. PTO can print up some pretty self adhesive labels saying who donated the book that go on the inside cover.

As a parent, I would have my child work for the money and donate it to the library so the book would be donated in his name. (Great way to tie in lessons on helping the community while getting child to do more chores at home... )

Has anyone ever done such a thing? How would you track who adopts which book to ensure that we don't have 5 families who all want the same book with their name as the donator? We have access to some techy people, perhaps we could put it on our website so that a book is removed from the adoption list once a family adopts it.

Thanks for any ideas/help/advice you have.
