Easter Egg Hunt

MetsyMom, I would probably call it an Egg Hunt formally. Our school is quite small and we still have a "Christmas Program" that is called by that name and Christian songs proclaiming God and Jesus and the whole works. Call is "old fashion" or even politically incorrect. That's, I guess, just the way it's been done for a long time, and since no one has stood up to protest, we just keep doing it that way.

We have a very small school. There are just a handful of other religions and the PTO has offered to host any type of event they would like to help plan, none have ever been suggested.

We've never actually hosted an Easter Egg Hunt, as far as I know. I haven't actually cleared it with any officials, yet. But I really doubt it will be a problem at our school.

Just out of curiosity:

How do you explain the Easter Egg Hunt to non-Christian parents and families? We aren't even allowed to call it Easter Break anymore because it isn't Politically Correct. Do you hold some sort of 'party' for each religion to balance it all out?

We only have a egg hunt for our kindergarteners but the higher grade levels get to help hide the eggs. We use the plastic eggs and place candy in them. We do have a restriction about puttin chocholate or anything that may melt or get gooey in the heat. The parents donate the items - ie: each child brings something.

Anybody have any experience with an Easter Egg hunt? We have a few local hunts sponsored by various organizations, but they are all VERY crowded and I don't think the kids have as much fun because of it. Last year my dd got 2 eggs, each with 1 jelly bean, and the eggs were in a section roped off probably 10 feet square! It was sad!

Anywhoo, I'm contemplating providing this for a service event. I'm thinking we could pull it off for around $300. Also have a few business that I have not yet asked for donation this year so that might provide some relief.

I was thinking of having 4 groups: (pre-sc, K, and younger sibs), (1st & 2nd), (3rd & 4th), and (5th & 6th). I don't think I would offer it to the local public. I wouldn't turn anyone away probably but we wouldn't advertise outside of school.

I was thinking of filling 1200 eggs with candy. Putting 1 or 2 "special" eggs in each group for a larger prize. Have the kids empty out their eggs, keep the candy, and return the eggs to us for use again next year. The "special eggs" would be filled with a slip of paper.

Our school is in a rural area and sits on a very large lot (several acres), plenty of space to give the kids "room to run" and search.

I think this would be great fun, especially for the younger kids. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Possibly, any ideas for making it more difficult for the older kids? Any "been there/done that" would also be great! thanks in advance! Jess
