Kmamom: Hi How are you? I recently found a great idea which helps with the # calling situation...I shared this with Bertha.
Say you have 300 seats. Everyone gets a # between 1-300 given to them on a label or name tag. You write that # on the back of all the tickets you are putting in the containers. They caller then calls the written #. So lets say you are #137. That is the only # you need to listen for all night long. No more weeding through your tickets trying to figure out if you won. Now people can actually have more fun and socialize now!
Most Tricky Trays in our area (northern NJ) are adults only. Fire codes restrict how many people we can fit in a room, and since kids can't gamble/spend money, groups want to get in as many paying entrants as possible. Besides that, you have to listen very carefully to the numbers being called (after the third call we pull another ticket), and since the caller tries to go through them as quickly as possible (with over 300 baskets at times we try to move things as quickly as possible) most people don't want the distraction of kids.
Most other fundraising events (except for our PTA's Spring Dance) are generally centered around kids so it's usually not an issue.
I like the idea of holding the auction at a banquet hall and allowing people to drink. It probably loosens them up a bit to spend more money
Ours is much more of a family/community event and we combine the auction with the Spring Fling dinner and games....so with the combination of things going on, the school building works best for us. I don't really know of any elementary schools in my area that go to the expense of renting a hall. I think it would work here if we did a much larger auction and didn't combine it with so many other activities that night.

I find that interesting that your school holds an event in which only parents are invited. I know that some of the schools in the nearest large city hold dances for parents as a fundraiser, but it's not done in my town. I don't think we do enough fundraisers to hold events that would not include the kids.
