Walk-A-Thons

Our school does an annual Walk-A-Thon each year. It is held right after school from 3:30 to 5:30p.m. The children are given pledge sheets, the donations can be a flat fee or a per lap fee. After the pledge sheets are filled out the students return them to school with their permission slips and we then make a "foot" for them with the die-cut machine and put the child's name on it and put a piece of ribbon on it so they can put it around their neck. We hire a DJ to come and play music and have sno-cones, chips and juice. We have volunteers who stand at the start/finish line and use different hole punches to tag the "foot" each time they cross. When the Walk is finished we collect all the "feet" and tally them up and send home the totals the next day so the kids can collect the money.

We donate all the money raised to The Shriner's. Because our other fundraisers go over so well and we want to help the kids learn more about compassion and by doing this they can feel good about helping other kids. The Shriner's bring out the Keystone Cops, Big Inflatable Characters, and the bus they use to transport the kids and give all participants tickets to The Shrine Circus. We have also started a precident because we are the first school to do a major fundraising event for them. Walk-A-Thons are really fun and everyone looks forward to it

Our school does an annual "Jog a Thon" it is held at our school because we have a beautiful paved 1/2 miles track at our school. Our event is coming up on May 17th, so we have jut had all our ptinting done for this year's event. If you have a school fax I would be welcome to send it over for you to look at it. I don't think emailing will work as well because of the format...let me know..email me at:

Our PTO is interested in conducting a walk-a-thon next school year, but my vice president and I have no direct experience. Is it held during school hours? On a Saturday? How are the pledges/donations gathered (if not door-to-door)? I'd love to hear about how other schools have done it. The more details, the better. How much can we expect to raise with a school of approximately 350 students, knowing they won't all participate? Thanks for any input you can provide!
