Question about funding fundraisers

I have a question that I just don't understand the answer that the PTO gave to me. I am on a few commities (box tops, ink jets, santa shop etc) and I was told that I couldn't spend a lot of money on it because it raises big red flags to get audited. Ok, for instance I have a BOX TOPS store that I run 2X a year...where I buy things and the kids inturn "buy" them from me using box tops. I try to double our money. But they are always concerned with how much I am spending. It is not because we won't be earning as much profit as it is how it will look on the books. They would perfer me to do a simple donated pizza party to the highest class. The kids LOVE the "store" and I would hate to do away with it when I just don't understand the point. I see it (and I have been told that is worng to look at it this way) as long as I have brought in more money then is spent then the books should be fine. I thought I would get a "out of my school" opinion. And if I am wrong I am wrong, but at least I will know others agree with them.
