Our school hosted its first run this year. It was a 5K and "tiger trot" for the littlest ones. It netted $18,000. We had one chairwoman for the event who organized the volunteers through volunteerspot.com. Food and drinks were donated by local businesses. It was professionally timed (which everyone really loved). We also managed to tie-in with Girls on the Run. What worked for us is having a very passionate chairwoman (she's an avid runner). She really enjoyed putting the event together & plans to do it again for the next couple of years. We have changed the date, to earlier in the year, due to the inclement weather. The plan is to grow the program annually.
Our school principal is suggesting that we do our own fun run type fundraiser next year. The past few years we have done the fun runs through outside companies that keep a good percentage of the funds. Our previous boards have been happy with having an outside company run it, but are interested in hearing how others have done their own fun runs (especially if you've done one after doing a company sponsored one) to see how much you made and how hard it was volunteer wise.
