We do quite a few events that require assstance during the year and are fortunate to have never had to pay for it.

In our school district, our high school students are required to complete 40 community service hours to meet their grauation requirements. I know that many other districts require this also. Check with your local high schools for volunteers. While the may not have this requirement, volunteerism looks great on college applications.

Wow! Our Student Council is asked (and often volunteers BEFORE being asked) to help with events, but never receive compensation or a percentage of the proceeds. It's not really volunteering then. And 15% seems like a large amount. However, if you agreed to it, then you should pay it this time, but decide ahead of time what to do in cases like this.

My wife recently joined the PTO, and most of the members don't have any prior experience with PTO issues.
During the planning of one of the fundraising events, they were told that the Student Council would be volunteering at the event. In exchange for their work, they would expect 15% of the proceeds. When it was mentioned that a smaller % would be given, the suggestion was made that it would result in "less effort" by the student council. (BTW these are our kids).

Is this normal?

My child is in student council, however I feel that student Council should teach our children about civic duty, and not just doing things to get paid. Am I wrong here?

If Student Council were to ask for financial assistance, I am sure that the PTO would be more than willing to help. Its just that this seems a lot like extortion.

Thanks.
