MySpace

Our district actually has an FBI agent come and speak to parents every year about the dangers of MySpace, Facebook and the other sites. They have documented cases that they show us of abduction or abuse cases related to kids posting on these sites. Two were from our area! Some of the stories were shocking and brought parents to tears.
We would NOT in any way encourage any student to create a page on such websites and always speak of the dangers on the internet.

Oh--and any school can have the FBI come and speak to parents at their school. They also offer information on software to install so you can track every website that was visited on your computer and some that will provide a script to every keystroke--you can actually read back what your kids were chatting about!

Doing it for my one and only ~~ my son!

You might consider goodsearch.com

It's a search engine like Google. Ideally, you set it as your home page, or primary search page, and designate a charity. Every search made adds a penny or two to that charity.

It's tiny amounts, but if you got a large group to participate, it would add up.

I'm with beignets on this one. Admittedly, without out checking out the link or the program, I would not encourage using MySpace for any reason within school. What parents decide to do at home and allow their children to do at home is entirely at their discretion. But the dangers of MySpace has been illustrated in too many ways for me to ever be comfortable approving it's use with a fundraiser. There are way too many options to choose from.

Thanks, kimmey, for sharing. I mean no disrespect. For those who find this a successful way to raise funds, good for you!

I would rather eat candy bars the rest of my life than encourage my kid to use my space for social networking.

MySpace was created by kimmeyj7
One of the librarians at our school found that most of the kids had MySpace pages. Someone had told her about a new social networking website that pays users a portion of their ad revenue so most of the kids and parents have signed up there. It is free and it seems that it will be an easy way to raise funds. I'll do just about anything to not have to sell (Mostly eat) another candy bar. Here's a link if you are interested. Yuwie.com
