Atrocious Auction Attendence!

Sounds like you did everything that you could have done and if you do it next year, do it all again. Word of mouth will carry and your attendance will probably be higher.

It's almost the end of the year, celebrate your success!!

Thank you... you are of course right.. we raised more money then last year on Auction with less registered bidders then they did the year before.. so we are celebrating.. we just also want to get some ideas for changes while the "iron is still hot"

Just an FYI the 6700 breaks down as follows:
5000 Actual Auction (live and silent)
1000 Raffles and a cafe (served pizza, drinks and desserts real cheap)
700 - "Patron sponsorship" we contacted businesses that didn't have a "direct" item to donate i.e. the local doctor's office and we asked them to be a "patron" sponsor.. for 50.00 they sponsored a classroom's craft.. and helped offset our costs going into Auction of buying crafts etc

Thanks for replying!

I agree with jurijeka, your event was obviously a success. But at the same time there is no harm in improving upon already successful events, and now is the time to discuss as it is fresh in your mind. Get these ideas down in your minutes so that you'll have reference for next year...

- Childcare is definitely a major way to increase participation. We often try to set up childcare down in the gymnasium, with parent volunteers runnings games, etc., down there so that the parents can enjoy the event.

- Maybe try to couple the auction with a kids friendly activity. That way the children will want to attend and the parents will "come along".

- Open it up to the community so that non-school adults can bid as well (depending on the items that you are auctioning off).

- Make sure that the event doesn't conflict with children's sports. There's a lot of activities going on right now, from baseball, softball, soccer, etc.

- Try to contact local sports teams, at least 6 months in advance, and ask for donations. We do this every year and usually get a signed baseball, a signed football, etc.. These items often are a great way to lure in the men.

- Ask for donations from local vendors. For example, golf items would be a big hit. Try to get a golf bag, a club, balls, etc. and package it together. That way when you send home the fliers about the event you can talk about some of the great items.

- Take out an add in the local paper, or see if they would be willing to post it at no cost.

- If your town has a cable channel see if you can have your event posted.

- See if one of the families near your school, that live on the main street, would be willing to have a bill-board posted a week or so before the event.

Hope these help.

Hi Everyone,

I am a long time lurker, first time poster.. and would love some feedback on how to get people to come out to our Auction...

Here is the scoop...
We service 2 schools with about 800 kids enrolled
We only had 54, registered bidders.
We held it on this past Saturday night from 6-9
We had really good items up for bid and we sent home an "Auction Times" that detailed all of the items up for bid... we started this over 6 weeks ago.. sent home once a week to every kid, we also sent home classroom specific items with every child ie. "Your childs class has made X and this item will be up for bid at Auction", items were either silent auctioned or live auctioned...
Given the low turnout we still raised over $6,700, but even getting out 25-40 more registered bidders would of made a huge difference to the amount raised...

We have come up with the following to perhaps help turnout, but would really love some feeback before we committ to these:
Hold Auction at the end of February when nothing is "going" on
Hold it on a friday night
    Add daycare...

Any other suggestions would be greatly.. greatly appreciated...
