Thanks for all the quick bits of encouragement. I understand the overseeing of material release to public, but it seems that with one person doing so many jobs including the Principal, I believe more in empowering your forces not Micro managing things. I see the status quo in all of the groups like this and it bothers me, especially a trying to get dads more into these types of groups. We want the meat to sink our teeth into; don't ask me to hold meetings just tell me when we're building the new school... You know what I mean folks... I'll build the new playground and let the cookie cutters keep making their popcorn money for now... I can spend more time teaching the kids and get more from it.............. I'll be active doing something so look forward to hearing from all... Thanks ALL...

We have to all our outgoing letters approved by the principal also.

Maybe you could start small and start on working getting out a newsletter each month. Being from a small town myself many folks don't adapt to change very well at first.

Small bites small bites. A little can be alot!!

Great that a dad wants to be involved. Also after being in the banking world for so long before I became a SAHM and now a PTO Pres you will find many similarities to being in the PTO. Its the hardest job doing the PTO but the most reward and you don't get paid a dime. .

Maybe you can take those big ideas you have and start off a little smaller? The principal and school may be a bit wary of jumping full speed ahead into larger projects. Plan some smaller events and grow from there. It is going to take some time but that's usually how it needs to go, especially when the school may only be used to thinking on a smaller scale.

Definitely check more into the concert idea with the principal and school. I agree with pals that that can be a tricky area in many school districts. I don't know if you are part of a private school or public school but check into their guidelines on those types of things.

We also have the principal give a "second pair of eyes" to everything we send out since we may be a separate entity (with finances and such) but we do ultimately represent the school in a large way.

Hi Gator. I agree with pals that the principal sees and approves anything that goes out for the reasons she mentions. I've been in three groups and they've all had that rule. From reading posts here, I gather that the principal and/or church have even more control over private schools.

It's frustrating, I know, to feel like all of your ideas are being shot down. You sound like a real go-getter. As for the small town thinking, I guess that's a good or bad thing depending on your perspective. Big plans, big ideas, big fundraisers and big changes can all be fantastic ideas but a bit too much for small groups, small towns or places where folks are just trying really hard to maintain a small town feel in our global society.

It isn't as much about 'conforming' as it is about the representative group working within the ideals and comfort zone of the community they serve. Continue to work with the passion and energy you have but maybe try to find ways to do that within the arena you find yourself in.

It is common that principals see everything before ot gets printed, handed out, etc. What gos out is a refection on your school and the district. I know that wasn't the answer you were looking for. As far as Christian concerts that is a very touchy subject for any school group even off of school grounds, again using that school name to promote it.

I recently began getting more involved with the PTO. I've been a doer for years and have come up with some mind blowing ideas to raise a very lot of money for our school & parish. Unfortunately I'm getting small town thinking from those around me and the principal seems to be afraid of going for any of my ideas. I want to know how much say or decision power does a principal have in the PTO? If the event is not held on school grounds? Our Newsletter is nonexisitant now and when I start it rolling I get, must see first before print? Anyone have a view point? I get feeling like I did working for the governement and spending days or weeks still nothing is done...
That's why I quit that job,,,, Maybe someone can help me get conformant again..HUH....Christian concerts are great festivals and raise thouands but if small minds think small 60-1000 is good funds....... Think Big and you'll get there.......... HELP ME Please.........
