Santa's Workshop

We do the Santa's Workshop all our own without a company. We found that the products were too expensive, and a lot of children just couldn't afford to pay the prices all the companies seemed to want.

We know go to a dollar store...stock up for presents for all types of people. Then the students can shop and pay $1 for each present. The Dollar Tree in our area agreed to allow us to bring back unsold items for a refund since they knew what we were doing. However, we usually keep the items.

The kids like it better this way, and we feel better as adults because more children can be involved. Also, most of the presents we buy are just as good if not better than quite a bit of the stuff that the companies brought in.

Order locally if possible, that way if you run out of something you can re-order and receive it quickly. Ordering locally also gives you a chance to see what you are ordering.
Never let a whole class shop at one time, especially K-3. These children need individual attention. (One child per volunteer)
Schedule at least one board member in charge each day and have that board member make follow up calls, the night before, to make sure their volunteers can still help out. They will be responsible for finding a replacement, counting the money, restocking and locking up that day.
ALWAYS order more then you think you will need...most places will take back merchandise.

We are looking for a company for next year. Has anyone had better products or services with one vs. another? Any suggestions on how to make it run smoother and more effective. Very bumpy week, not alot of help, alot of confusion.
Thanks:)
