If you get the insurence thru PTO Today it is alot cheaper.

And if you were affiliated with National PTA it is even cheaper

Monty,
"Something's already wrong and it's with our education system, something PTA fights to improve for everyone."
I must say I'm all for people being a part of their childrens lives and schools. I also belong to my childrens PTO and plan on running for a board position next year.
I appreciate that the PTA is "fighting to improve" my childrens education. But I have yet to really see any results. Things I didn't want for my childrens education are still in effect so that doesn't seem to really be helping.
I did, however, see my child's school pay for new computers, books, PE equipment, field trips, school supplies, family events, etc. through the parents at the school. We aren't really interested in the fight. We're interested in making it better now.

Hmmm... the life insurance analogy.

Yes, I have life insurance. I think I pay a couple of hundred dollars per year, and if I pass early my wife and kids get hundreds of thousands of dollars. And yes, I hope they never collect.

But how does that apply to the PTA dues? A group pays $1,000 per year and if something goes wrong, they have what? Someone to call? Are you saying a group should pay $1,000 per year as a back-up, so that in case something goes wrong (like a president not running elections correctly), the group can call the state PTA and complain? Seems like a steep insurance policy, especially if that's all you get if things go wrong.

Something's already wrong and it's with our education system, something PTA fights to improve for everyone. Again, I suppose the difference is whether you only care about your own school or for the education of all kids.

Hello from Ma. I am the PTO Persident at our elementary school. We are incorporated. We put together all the fund raising at the school, and we handle all the money. The principal has no control over the money and it all stays in the school. We do not charge any dues because we have so much from our fundraisers. We do about 6 fund raisers for the year. We have other schools in the district that are not incorporated and the money goes to the district fund. The way we looked at it our kids raise that money it should only be used for our kids. We handle about 30,000.00 for a school of about 400 and we pay for feild trips computers other technology each teacher gets about 100.00 for their classroom. We do soooo much with that money. The big touchy subject for a while untill I came on to the board was INSURANCE!!! GET IT!!!! GET IT!!!! GET IT!!!! That will protect you from theft and so much more. If you get the insurence thru PTO Today it is alot cheaper. As a volunteer before the board position I was the fund raiser coordinator. When I found out that the PTO did not have insurance and that I was personally responsible for the kids if they got hurt and that a parent could come after me and take my house, car and anything else, I refused to handle the fundraiser unless they got insurance. So after a long battle and only a couple of hundred dollars we are protected. Do your homework! hope this helps.

Amen.

While it may seem nice to keep that $3.00 in the school, I agree that the representation is priceless.

As far as the AAA analogy goes, I'll bet you have a life insurance policy. And you will never receive a penny from it while you are alive. by your thought process, if you are young and in good health you shouldn't buy life insurance!
