Changing from PTA to PTO- depleting funds

Thanks for the reply. Did you have to take a vote of your general membership to approve the switch. Did you use last years membership since this year's campaign hasn't started?

We're in the same boat as you are. We are opening up our new account using the money from our first fundaraiser(flyers went out as PTO). Our membership drive will start up the first day of school as PTO. We are going to cut the Principal a big check from our PTA account(to close it out) the check will go towards field trips. Then we will be done with PTA.

I am the PTA president of an elementary school. We have just started the discussion of becoming a PTO and disbanding from PTA. I'm not clear in the area of spending down our funds. At what point do we open a seperate account? Being that it is the beginning of a year and we have not had our membership campaign yet. Don't we have to go ahead and collect PTA dues and then take a vote of the general membership? How can we make money as a current PTA, but deposit it into a PTO account? Any advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
