Wanting to change- Need advice

Well, there is a specific fashion you must follow in order to disband a PTA. You should have all the details in your current PTA bylaws. Notice must be given to the membership, a meeting must be held, a PTA representative must be allowed to speak, etc.

Make sure you follow the instructions found in your bylaws, so there's no question of "was the disbanding process a fraud?"

Your remaining funds raised in the name of PTA, if it hasn't been spent in the name of your PTA prior to disbandment, will have to be returned to your either local or state PTA office.

All the information you need to begin a PTO is right here on this site. Tim and Company can help you immensely.

One other thought: make sure you definitively show your parents/volunteers the similarities and differences between PTA and PTO. This helps them understand, if you believe so, that being an independent PTO is better for your situation based on whatever reasons you have.

At the same time, help them see that the structure of the unit itself and its activities will be very similar in nature; in fact, you'll be freed from some limitations and be able to work locally, work together with other area schools, or anyone else in the nation for that matter; the possibilites are limitless.

Many times, PTA units (mostly state PTA's on their websites) like to say PTO's are just fundraisers for local schools and cannot make an impact on the community. That's a joke. Don't believe it.

Good luck!!!

Let me start by saying we are a PTA - 165 students - private school - Average 30-45 parents at meetings.
I have now been elected Prez again as I probably will until my little one(3 yrs old) gets out of middle school. I don't want to jump ahead but thats prez for 10 more years! This is now my third term we had a PTA Prez and the PTO sounds like the way to go for us. Our PTA dues were not sent out by our treasurer. I do not know our status w/the state or national PTA.

Is there a "must do" process to disband as a PTA and start a PTO or what? The exec board has made their voice known and we are all in favor of becoming a PTO. My question is now that the year is almost over and all money will be dispersed can we just switch over?
