PTO VS. PTA

I can't speak for PTA's, but PTOs can raise money for whatever the group agrees it should (within the boundaries of how it was setup, of course).

However, I think that most of us agree it's not the best idea for PTOs - especially at public schools - to raise funds for core items. It's a bandaid approach that doesn't help the longterm problems - and sometimes causes new problems when a district further cuts budgets in areas the PTO supplements one year.

That's not to say PTO's don't fund necessities. These are tough times, and many are doing "whatever it takes". But preferred model would be for the the PTO to help with supplemental programs and supplies.

I am a concerned parent in a school district considering going to PTO from PTA. I understand both entities are beneficial for the children IF they are run and managed effectivly. Our district has had many failed referendums that has kept various programs from our schools. Instead our children have had to suffer due to these failed attempts. With seemingly lax budget appropriation it seems the voices of PTO want to step in where the district has failed and the PTA cannot: building repairs, playground blacktop etc. Be it rumored or not - is this something that should be the responsibility of the PTO or is it solely left up to the disgression of the PTO Executive board? As a concerned parent and, in my opinion, with my tax dollars already not being well spent I feel my concerns are valid and should be addressed. To whom should I address these concerns and where can I find out more information regarding "governing" of the PTO?

I think that PTA and PTO are both vitally necessary and any parent group that is positively working for the benefit of children and parents is a great idea for any and all schools. Most schools cannot afford National and State dues so PTO is a way out, but for the schools who can and do great. It takes all kind to run this world.
