Would PTA be better

Our bylaws state clearly that the Treasurer is accountable for all money and accounts as well as inventory

If that is what your bylaws state then don't comply with what she is demanding. Tell her you are going to abide by the bylaws as that is what you took office to do. Tell her if she wants the
key and the checkbook that she will have to have the bylaws ammended to say that. Which she will need a vote to do. No treasurer in their right mind should hand over anything that they are solely responsible for.

Think about this...You are responsible by for that checkbook and account. Once it leaves your possesion you no longer have any control over it. Should anything go wrong you will still be held responsible.

Our bylaws state clearly that the Treasurer is accountable for all money and accounts as well as inventory but this does not keep this person from telling people what to do and generally bullying everyone around. I asked a long time teacher what she thought and she said that this is why is has always prefered PTAs so I thought I would look into it. I know that some people will never be happy but I feel like I am in a position that I can not handle by myself and I am having trouble finding anyone that can help me and thought if I could have this figured out that if it happened again, I would know what course of action to take.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

My question is, if we were a PTA instead, is there some other chain of command that could be addressed to help resolve these issues?

I would say that the answer to that is a definite "maybe." In theory, there is at least a state unit above your local unit, and there is most likely some sort of regional council between your local unit and the state. Somewhere in there, there should be people who can intervene. But, it all depends on the quality of the people in those positions. I'm always very impressed by MichelleB and the stuff her PTA does; if I were in her state, I'd call her in a minute to help with something like what you are experiencing. My own experience in my state is drastically different--I would hire a mediator before I would ever let a state PTA person try to help me out.

I haven't read all your other posts about the problems you are experiencing, but I don't think switching to PTA is going to help much. If you switch from PTO to PTA, and have the same people involved, you'll still have the same problems.

From what I can recall, it seems more like what you need is some changes in your bylaws, or maybe someone to act as a parliamentarian to make sure you follow Robert's Rules.

We are currently a PTO, but we are having problems with our President not following bylaws and telling the rest of us that she can tell us what to do because she is president. For example, I am Treasurer and she is telling me that I must give her my key to our storage cabinet as well as the checkbook. The attorney for our school district said we either need to vote her out of office, which I'm not sure people will want to do because she isn't tormenting all of them, or that we should hire private mediation because the PTO is a private entity and therefore the district can not intercede unless we are doing something that could mean problems for them in which case she said the group would be disbanned for the rest of the year. My question is, if we were a PTA instead, is there some other chain of command that could be addressed to help resolve these issues? I am hoping that the principal or asst will help us get this in order and I would like to know if by switching, I can help prevent a similar issue and the possibilty of there not being any parent group allowed in our school. Please help me.
