PTA isn't political??

20 years 2 months ago #76052 by Michelle B
Okay, just fired off an e-mail to the rest of our state board members. Hate to ruin their Mondays but we will have to deal with this! Nevada has a resolution of neutrality that this issue would fall under-
www.nevadapta.org/wherewe.html See under PTA organizational decisions. and WHY we wouldn't do something like this.
I have sent an e-mail to the CA state office asking how this could fall under our mission statement and although the council has a right to write the resolution, how it could possibly pass considering the fact that this detracts from our mission. If any of the other PTA members on this site are so inclined (I am not urging anyone to do what I have done) but they could do the same!

I am going to get some fallout on this also. California is close enough that it will trickle over and although we would NEVER touch this issue, I'm going to get the questions! This pisses me off! Serendipity is right and most of the other PTAs will agree with that. (California just loves to piss us off, I think!) I just sent off an e-mail to the CA office asking for more information but Thanks for the warning!

Apparently I'm a little dense--can someone please explain to me the purpose of this council presenting this resolution?

Yes, to piss me off!
Okay, not exactly a position that many of our PTAs would touch, but also not using any of the dues money that the rest of the country pays.(Dues goes to state and national) My council collects seperate dues (ours is $50 a unit) and none of the money a council collects is used for anything other than assisting local units and operating costs. It is however, only a resolution and what this means is that the units in this council, got together and drafted the resolution for THEIR council. They voted on it and it passed with a 2-3rds majority. This is a resolution year and all units, councils, prepare the resolutions that they want to present at the state general meeting, held at the convention. It will be presented there and then voted on. But it has to pass at state to be adopted as a resolution. Each unit has the autonomy enough to pass their own resolutions for their unit. Council's must use the units (council's membership) to vote on their own resolutions and so forth.
Essentially, this council has decided to take this issue on because THEY feel it's important TO THEM. This does not in any way represent any other PTAs positions. California is an island unto itself... but if that is what their membership decides is important, that is their perogative. I personally would oppose it based on the divisiveness it would perpetuate.
I can assure you that it won't make it past National to become a national resolution. (Too divisive)
Good time for California units to make certain they are there to vote when this comes up at convention.

Wow...apparently those people think someone cares about their stance on the gay marriage issue.

As a parent I would be outraged by their behavior.
This has nothing to do with my beliefs on the issue. I don't think an organization that represents children should be stating any opinion about any kind of sex heterosexual or homosexual.

Wow! I'm glad I don't live in Palo Alto. It's hard to believe that it is only about 100 miles away, but oh so far away in many, many ways.
