How did you get your PTO start up funds?

20 years 2 months ago #75938 by kmamom
I should think that any profits made should go to the PTA, since it is a PTA fundraiser. However since a PTO could be another tax-exempt group, I don't see why monies couldn't be spent there.

Our group received it's start up fees from my husband and I--we did it figuring we'd get paid back eventually.

In my post i meant to say we were told to use PTA as fundSPENDER and PTO as fundRAISER. Sorry.

We have voted and are in the process of starting up a PTO and disbanding our PTA. We had been told to use PTO as fundRAISER and PTO as fundSPENDER until we spent out PTA funds out. This way national PTA could not threaten to take PTA funds left and we would have money in PTO. I was also under impression PTO should get new tax i.d. number and apply for its own tax exempt status. School bookkeeper says we can just write out a check for money in PTA account to the school as all money matters for PTO have to go thru them. I looked at PTA bylaws and it DOES say that on disbanding, any monies left should be given to another non-profit organization with tax exemkpt status, which is the school is. But i want to do it right as i will be assuming the presidency next year and we are already planning on our first pto fundraiser. Any opinions?

We are in the process of trying to disband our PTA. One of our big worries is how we are going to fund all of the start up costs of PTO. We have a big function coming up that expenses are being paid out of the PTA funds. Legally can the profits go to the PTO or do they have to go back to PTA? We have recieved donations of items so we have used PTA's tax ID #.

Thanks for any ideas you may have!
