Does you organization have bylaws? Does it have established goals? Is it recognized as a non-profit by the IRS? All these are valid questions when it comes to the running of your group.
As for who can be members, our bylaws state that anyone who agrees to the objectives can join. But to be an officer, you must have a child attending the school.
I am informed of the meetings. For example this week the pto is having a spegetti dinner at the school. All the money made to my understanding will go will go toward a group of non profit organizations in our community. Thats what I was told first then we had a child die recently and the pto wants to give it to the family of that child, if the family will accept it. which is a good idea, but nothing has been sent home saying they have changed there minds of where the funds will go. at the dinner I dont think the pto will not talk about parents about joining. Will just have the dinner and they will tell of the next event they have planned and that's it. I've gone to the principal and told her I was very interested in helping out any way I can. She said I can attend there next meeting in november she hasn't made up her mind what date it will be on. What happened to october? (that I didn't ask) I told her that I was a manager of a clothing store that all I having working with me is volunteers, that I am the only paid employee. Maybe I could help out and maybe help out with anything else she wants me to do. The PTO meeting in september only lasted 45 minutes ALOT of parents showed up, but all they did was install the student government and the super intendent stopped by with info on our mold situation and that it will be taken care of. the principal concluded the meeting by giving her thanks to all who have showed up and if you want tickets to the dinner they are located outside the door, it u would like one please stop by on your way out. I was stunned, what happened? all these parents and not mention of we would appreciate your help if you like to join or attend our next meeting ..... not a word. I'm not mad, by no means, I feel some improvement can come about if they would explain more, and stress to the parents we would love to have you join or help out with the pto. The principal said parents have helped out in the past but always wind up not coming back. That sounds like a cry of help to me. thank you for any suggestions you may give. :confused:
Why do you feel that it is hard to get in? Do you feel that you are not informed of the meetings and such? I ask because the more info you give on here, the more advice you can receive.
what exactly does the letters PTO stand for and can teachers be members of the PTO?
reason for asking it seems like teachers in our school that have children attending there run the PTO and its hard to get in even after I filled out the form sent home. [img]smile.gif[/img]
