What to do with PTA Dues?

Just as additional info, PTA has National and local perks/support. You can borrow videos, books, and have speakers come to your school for FREE. And PTA gets involved with many (ie Safety) issues on a legislative level. That's why you/we pay dues. Perhaps if you looked at it that way, you wouldnt be so against paying a dues. Have you looked at the national site? PTA.org. It tells you exactly where your money goes.

Just hoping to give you more info. BUT whatever you call it, we are here for the kids!

Well, I guess I blew a big opportunity tonight. To a full house we approved the propossed budget which has $1,500 listed for state PTA dues, but the national PTA dues were not listed as a line item. Must have been buried in the $2,000 misc.

I would just love to be able to have our teachers spend that on their class wish lists!

I'm trying to encourage the new leaders to look into the change. I think they think it is up to them to vote on whether we change. I may be wrong, but I feel it is up to the parents as a whole to make that call. After all it is our dues being sent away. Has anyone out there got any suggestions.

I don't think you have to accept new members. If you are considering going PTO soon, I wouldn't take new PTA memberships until you're sure.

If someone returns dues, tell them to hold the dues money until you're sure whether you'll be a PTO or PTA. That's what I'd do. That way, if you decide to go PTO you can keep the PTO dues and not feel like you've sold under any kind of false pretenses.

That's what I'd do if I was being really official. If I wasn't being really official, then I wouldn't feel bad about not sending in dues once we decided to go PTO. That's what i'd do. It's not like you have to send in dues the minute you collect them.

I am not sure exactly what you should do, but I know that we are a PTO and we love it. I couldn't imagine charging dues to something that should be a perk for the parents. They give money all year towards things for the school so we do not collect dues and do not charge for things like school directories and some of our functions. Another perk that our PTO offers is... the district collects $5.00 at the beginning of the year for each student to attend some theater productions during the school year. Our PTO puts aside $2,000 in the budget to pay for this. It was a big hit with the parents. So, I wish I could've given you more info and a better response, but I love being a PTO. :D

I am a parent trying to get our PTA to go PTO. So far Principal and PTA Board are open to discussing it. Good!
The President is concerned that we are responsible for the PTA membership cards already filled out and MUST pay the PTA for them, that we can only return Blank cards for credit.
Our first general meeting is tonight. More parents may be signing up. Board has been too busy to look into this but promis to by next month. What do you recomend we do now?
