Christmas gifts for PTO officers using PTO money

17 years 7 months ago #74667 by Daddio044
I find it hard to believe that in your school that there are "only 3 parents, along with myself, who do everything for the school". You don't have any volunteers at events, classroom helpers, etc? But, that topic would be for another thread.

The PTO is a not for profit and I'm not sure what your bylaws have, but regardless I think spending the $30 is not acceptable in my opinion even if you "made $2,054" by your self for the school. Key thing you mentioned is it was "for the school". If you do want to get gifts for them do it personally or even get donations for them. Another thing, if you really do that much why doesn't the staff say thanks instead of spending it from the PTO funds?

the main problem I see with this is the perception of others. If they find out you are buying Christmas gifts, with money they helped you earn, it could cause lots of questions. They will wonder if you are buying each other birthday gifts and other types of gifts from the PTO funds. I understand you are the ones organizing things, and are the ones at the school making htings happen, but these parents are participating in fundraisers and spending money at activities you hold. they have a right to know the money is all benefiting the children. I knew when I got involved with PTO it was a lot of (seemingly) unthankful time and energy. I get my thanks when the students see me and give me their toothless little grins and wave and say Hey Mrs. K. I also know that my children are benefitting becuase of my involvement in the school. There is a long post about a crazy volunteer talking about involvement in schools raising academic achievement and behavior. THIS is my thanks. And knowing that I am helping all students in the school in some way is better than any store bought gift anyone could ever give me. Just my .02 cents worth.

Good luck!

I forgot to mention that the 3 PTO officers that I want to buy a gift for are the only 3 parents, along with myself, who do everything for the school. We are the ones who run the fundraisers, count the money and deposit it in the bank, write letters and make copies of the letters and distribute the letters, do all of the shopping for all PTO events, come up with program and activity ideas for the children, etc.

If I wanted to do something, I'd pay for it myself! Small is good! Then no one can come back and complain about possible mis-use of funds. Then there are the possibilities to think of--if the board members get something, are the other hard working members of your group going to feel dissed? Hmm...

I, too, agree with the majority. I personally don't think PTO funds should be used. It's wonderful to want to show appreciation for your fellow board members. A hand written thank you would probably be just the thing. Or a small token paid for by you.

I come from a community where the majority of folks wouldn't know PTO funds were used and probably wouldn't care. But there are a handful who would be furious and make a lot of noise about it.

I'd say play it safe and do something on your own.

I have to agree with the majority here. Typically the PTO here tries to purchase appreciation gifts once a year but most are uncomfortable taking them becasue they know hard earned money that was to go the kids. In fact I flat out refuse to accept the gift. I would suggest purchasing out of your pocket; it protects the PTO, the kids, and most importantly yourself.
