Just attended my daughters (8th grade) trip meeting last night and they are going to Washington DC--this year. The school uses WorldStrides for the trip planning--its 4 days in Washington and then 1/2 day in Annapolis and 1/2 day in Baltimore. Cost for trip is $765 and includes the chartered motor coach, 3 meals a day, hotel room (for the entire week),admission to every landmark, memorial or event they attend, health insurance, sightseeing transportation,24 hour emergency support, and security at the hotel from 10 pm till 5 am.
Some places they will be visiting in Washington are-Capital Hill(Capital building,Supreme Court, Library of Congress),Arlington National Cemetary(Changing of the guard, tomb of the unknown soldier, space shuttle challenger memorial),White house,Mount Vernon, Fords Theatre, Petersen House, National Archives, Vietnam CVeterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, Kennedy Center, Iwo Jima Memorial, WWII Memorial, Washington Monument, Smithsonian Institute, Embassy Row, National Zoo, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Naval Museum, National Cathedral, National Geographic Society and then the Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Here is the website for WorldStrides---www.worldstrides.com Our school has used them for the 8th grade trip for many years. Hopes this helps some.

try this web site to the smithsonian - its for planning filed trips and might help you. Also, check with AAA - they have the books and maps and may have some helpful advice.

Good luck with your planning - the great thing about living 20 miles from our nations capital is that we have it close at hand! Enjoy!
