AR Quizzes used as grades

AR shouldnt be the only thing used for a students reading AND comprehension. It should be a mix for Language Arts and Reading

A lot can read at a higher level, but can they remember, comprehend and dissemenate what they've read?

Ex. My 3rd grade daughter is reading 'A Wrinkle in Time'- she can read the book but doesnt always know every word, ie.(the refrences in latin, german, spanish or french) or always it meaning. She also needs help with the undelying topic of 'Good vs Evil'- or 'Right vs Wrong' - or 'Belief vs NonBelief (not neccessarily religious belief just beleif in self, others, worth) and the religious and cultural symbolism -but as above she can read the book just fine.

I'd discuss with teacher, maybe work on memory skills/ techinque (Albrt Einstein flunkout of school) and testing (Lots of smart, normal well- adjusted people (kids and adults) just do crummy on quizzes and test), check the quizzes to see what the AR test look like..

Hope that helps

You should definitely speak with his teacher about this. At my daughter's middle school the students are expected to read AR books and take quizzes as part of their grade, but the teacher looks at each students reading level and then assigns them the appropriate quantity and level of books they are to read. AR can be a great tool if used properly, but this sounds like a situation where it needs some changes made.

My son is in 4th grade, but reads on a much higher level. At his school, the AR quizzes are used as a reading test grade in the classroom. In his case, he usually reads books that are 7th to 9th grade level. He recently scored 80 percent on 2 tests in 1 week. That brought his reading average down to letter grade of "B". His classmates typically read books below 4th grade level and get 100 percent of the questions. He doesn't want to read the "baby" books but in my opinion, is punished with the grade of 80 for choosing higher level books. Is it typical of schools to take AR quizzes as test scores? Am I wrong in feeling that he should be celebrated instead of punished for his reading? It looks as if he will be reduced to reading the "baby" books to maintain his reading average. I personally think 80 percent correct on quizzes twice your grade level is not equal to a "C" on that book.
