We are trying a back to school night before school starts this year to encourage the kids to bring in their school supplies before hand. Hoping this will draw a lot of families in to help cut down on the heavy backpacks the kids get sent with the first day of school. And to help with the first day jitters

Our elementary school holds a preview night a few days before the official start of school. The PTO sponsers and ice cream social and parents & children find out who their teacher and classmates will be and also tour the school.

Our school year starts on Thursday, so the Tuesday before we hold an ice cream social where kids are invited to bring their supplies and meet their teacher. Teachers use this time to get and give information to parents. Ice cream is outside the front door to get as you exit so the newly cleaned school doesn't get dirty before school starts.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

I was just voted chair of next years PTV and my first big event will be our Back to School Night. Fewer and fewer parents are attending each year and I heard a big problem is that the families come for dinner and then leave before they meet the teachers, which is very odd I think. I'm definitely changing the menu - everyone is tired of hot dogs! And I'm going to try the passport idea and somehow make it enticing to get a stamp from their classrooms. A raffle would be good but I'm not sure I can get that many raffle items in 2 months - better get to work on that! Anyone have some ideas to get the parents to the teachers rooms?

We haven't done anything in the past, but this year we are planning a big Meet the Teacher Night bash, with a cookout in the school yard, ident-a-kid and a few carnival type games. We also plan to have a PTO table with welcome packets, which will contain something like: A FAQ sheet, a Top 10 Reasons to join, a list of Board Members and Committe chairs, a request to fill open committe chairs, a form to sign up for our Three for Me program, a magnetic PTO business card with information about our web site, www.eastpto.com, etc. I was also thinking it would be neat to give away prizes throughout the evening, if we can get some donated for the cause. If it goes over well, it may become an annual event.
