Help victims of Huricane Katrina

18 years 10 months ago #73435 by Shawn
THe Governator at least is trying to fix 75 yrs of waste and management. He's got a plan other than LETS SPEND more money!!!

Do you actually live in CA? How the heck would you know what is really going on here? The New York Times or some other liberal media junket?

Register with the boards or Shut your yap (hopefully I dont get in trouble for that)

I'll debate you anyday on why CA and its liberal knuckleheaded politicians (Dem and Rep) have got their heads in the wrong place and are driving this place into a bigger whole than it already is in.

I may be narrow minded But we shouldnt Reward stupidity, ineptness or just the fact that someone thinks its someone elses responsibilty.

That's the problem with part of this country, nobody is responsible for themselves and thinks the govt and state should get them out (of anything) because they are poor and/or uneducated ( I grew up dirt poor, we ate hand sandwiches and govt cheese- THAT's whay I said poor isnt an excuse)
I spent time in the military, have a degree and own (and sold and ran into the ground) a few successful businesses- being poor, of the wrong race, ethnicity and/ or creed) is a copout.

I still walk almost everywhere with my kids and I do live in Los Angeles( home of the gotta drive my car 2 doors down to see my neighbor)
'cuz I was poor. I'm not now and hopefully never will be.

Notice it says IF your feet work, I said nothing about elderly, the sick, the infirm or children.
(Some people just couldnt, I understand that, the state should have done a better job)
They should charge the people that stay and could've left when the state issued the EVACUATION of New Orleans.

Why do we have to pay and cleanup others absolute knuckleheadedness (I really dont care how its spelled- if that's the only part of my opinion you can argue with.)

This the US, our US Govt is not in charge of STATE disasters, the state is, with assistance from the US gov't (Hence the United STATES of America)

I think the whole situation down there stinks. I also think the State of Louisiana and its politicians, police and govt dropped the ball, was my whole point.
There shouldnt have been 1 PERSON left in New Orleans (the city is 10 feet below water on 3 sides) What in the world did they think was gonna happen?

I want to know why the state didnt have command and control AND troops in place before.

"but the Knucleheaded LA Gov and Mayor's"

Shawn from Northridge, CA: You don't have room to talk with your Governor and by the way, it's spelled "knucklehead"

No excuse? You are so incredibly narrow minded. It blows my mind. What about people who are sick, elderly, or just don't have the resources that you and I have? You and I are very blessed. We have been given a lot, and also we have earned a lot. That is not the case for everyone. Many people did evacuate their homes and took shelter in the SuperDome. Please show a shred of humanity for others. Where should people who live in the "projects" go? Many have no cars, no money, and all their friends and relatives live there with them. I assure you that they had no vacation homes to go to, either. I ask you again, where were they to go? I don't think for one moment you can even begin to comprehend what it means to be dirt poor with no resources.
Lighten up!

Our school is doing a collection for the REdCross and our Ward (church) has been collecting donations.
;)
Just remeber whatever charity you send $$$ or supplies to MArk somewhere on the Memo line or on the items "Katrina fund" or they can do with it whatever they like by adding it to their general funding.

Hope they get the place cleaned up soon.
Then work on emergency prep and evacuation.
2,000 Guardsmen, the police force and no central command and control is utterly ridiculous (and not the US Gov't responsibility, but the Knucleheaded LA Gov and Mayor's) last but not least
"If your feet work, get out" "I'm too poor, I have NO transportation, IS Not an EXCUSE" "My 3 yr old could've walked out 4 DAYS before (Evac notice given)the hurricane hit"

This is SHC in Louisiana.(not logged in right at this moment). I am not in the area hit by Katrina, but am in the northern part of Louisiana where we have many evacuees. The schools in the hardest hit areas are, of course, completely closed and won't be open again for months and months, I hear. There are many, many parishes (counties) in south Louisiana that have been hit so I can't give you a particular school that needs help, because these people are scattered all over the state and Texas, etc. It is a neat idea to adopt a particular school but that would be months away, I fear. If you go to greatschools.com and put in Orleans parish schools, you will get a list of the schools in New Orleans. Perhaps this could be a starting point. When phone service resumes, maybe you could reach a principal or PTO leader at one of these schools and they could give you an idea of what their students might need. Many, many of these public schools are extremely poor, so be prepared for that.

In the interim, I guess the best thing to do is to collect supplies and money for immediate relief. I have posted a list of supplies on another thread that they are asking for.

I went to the shelter this morning and they had so many volunteers they were turning them away. I just felt bad that I could not fill their every need yesterday when I worked there
