My personnal insurance has taken care of the x-rays and doctor visit and the Business Manager and I talked yesterday and I do need to fill out a incedent report to document the accident but since I saw my doctor (I didn't want to go to the ER).

We don't have insurance, I now see the need and how it is more than a "nice to have" unfortunatly we have a $3000 budget but I hope with new adminitration that will all change!

My hand is feeling much better and my neighbor (she is a trainer at a gym) has shown me how to work the muscles that were bruised.

SO- what have we learned kids???? BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!! ;)

ptolisa--the closest thing you'll probably get to a PTO "law" book is by joining "PTO Today Plus." The reference materials are excellent.

mykidsmom--Ultimately, you probably would be covered by your parent group insurance, but they will still make any claim subject to your own personal health insurance first. Then, if it's like our policy, they'll try to get you covered by the school's policy next. The medical payments coverage available for parent groups is generally meant to be additional protection in the event of a catastrophic claim, not primary medical payment coverage. The school's policy is probably similar. (And they are probably just as unenthusiastic about having to file a claim as your parent group should be.)

There's just no way in this day and age that your school district would not have such coverage for school volunteers. And it's pretty difficult to differentiate between a school volunteer and a parent group volunteer, even with what you were working on. I suspect the person you were talking to was only aware of the district's workers compensation coverage, which is a whole different story. They are correct in that you would not be covered by that.

I would chalk your experience up more to ignorance than any affront to your status. Hopefully, the Business Manager has now set everyone straight on this.

ok, new to pto and new pres. What's this I hear about PTO insurance? I have so much to learn.
What about how much money we can have in the bank? And the IRS. Where do I find out all these PTO rules? I don't see this in RObert's rules or in my bylaws. is there another law book for PTO's?
Thank you.

I'm sure that it would fall under your PTO/PTA insurance. That's why we pay our $155 a year for our liability insurance to cover anyone getting hurt and such.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

I thought that's why PTO's were supposed to have insurance, because the school doesn't cover us. Am I wrong on this? I would ask at the district level. I'm also not sure that they will be able to do anythign since you went to your own doctor. even if they covered the incedent you would need to go to their doctor from my experience with insurance.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

I've mentioned before how our PTO does a big BBQ for the teachers, well last week the PTO and school hosted a Welcome back to school for ALL the staff and teachers. I ran out of food and received praises for a great job and everyone had a great time....but me. About an hour before we started the rented grill was delivered tothe school and the Building Mgr (Bob) and I were getting it set-up and checking it out. I was helping Bob as he was latching the main door (45 lb steel door) to the top so we could light the fire, the door slipped and closed on my right hand. If you look at your hand, inbetween your knuckle and your finger knuckles and then on the underside my finger tips were badly brused. NO BONES were broken and the grill wasn't lit (thank GOd!) but I am still stiff and very sore and (as told by the doctor) will be for a few weeks.
Here is where I am stuck. I went to the office to fill-out a report on Monday (could'nt hold a pen Friday let alone write!) and was told since I'm not an empolyee there was nothing they could do. I mentioned the school's liablity insurance and how I should fill out something for documentaion--- no, your fine. Something was mentioned about submitted my bill for the co-pay to the PTO and get my money back that way.

I have a meeting tommorrow morning with the Business Manager. I'm stuck. I was hurt on school property, I did go to my own doctor, but when did this become a non-issue? It's not the money (the Doctor was paid by my insurance) it's not the fact that I was hurt but when did I lose my status as a valued parent?

Okay...haven't typed in awhile...need to put the heat pad back on! :( It's so easy to help others fight the fight but I need some help here!

Thanks everyone!!!
