Do your schools pay for school supplies?

Our school does not give the kids any supplies whatsoever. They get the folder and agenda from us and the parents are responsible for getting the other supplies the kids need. At the end of each year every child goes home with the list of supplies their child will need for the next year, that way the parents have all summer long to get them what they need.

Our school is predominately low income but everyone involved in our group understands that our funds need to be used to "support" the school, staff, and families not "provide" for them. I would ask why they want you to do this. Is it because families can't afford the supplies? If so, local groups contribute by bringing supplies to our school, could this be done for yours? If it is because children aren't bringing the right supplies, then suggest use of one of those companies that prepares the supplies for the school. If it just because someone thought it would be a good idea, figure how much this would cost and ask them how they would go about raising said extra funds so your group can continue on its mission. And do it with a smile so they know you mean business!

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

wow...wouldn't it be nice if parents could rely on the school system to supply all of our children with supplies? But no while our politicians get more each year our schools get less! I haven't heard of this happening lately, seems like the cost would be out of sight and I wonder how much money you would have to raise for this.

That's certainly an idea we could never entertain. Do schools just set aside money from their budget for supplies?? I don't know.

Our PTO provides only a pocket folder and an agenda (homework daily planner)for each student with the school logo on it. This costs us about $2,000.

The request for you to buy all the school supplies for all the children is ridiculous. The cost you would incur for that would be staggering. I would not even entertain the thought of that for 1 minute.

I'm hearing more and more of schools where parents do not buy school supplies. A request to our PTO has been to help or completely buy school supplies for all students. Do your schools or PTO(A)'s purchase school supplies?? There is no way we could on our budget and still have anything left for fun stuff at no cost.
