Student Directory

I have a devil of a time logging into this site. Tim, if you are reading this, please advise why my password works sometimes but not others. I used to be 'almost used up' but had to switch login names because of these glitches. Yesterday I was able to log on, today, I am here as 'unregistered'. It's frustrating.

Anyway, Critter- I sent you an e-mail and my database with answer to your question. Also posted here:
First you can designate fields as 'memo' as that gives you almost unlimited length in the field. You should not need that feature though, as 'text' should meet your needs and you cannot sort on a memo field so it makes some reporting difficult. In the report, you can design the fields to shrink and/or grow to accomodate the increased length. Right mouse and go to 'properties' and click yes under 'can shrink' and 'can grow'. I have many families listed with multiple e-mail addresses, which Access easily handles. Truthfully, I have not used publisher for this application so can't really speak to the benefits of one vs. the other.

Access is not a standard part of office suite, at least I don't think so. As I do this all at work(sshhhh), I have no idea how to go about getting it or loading it.

ademom - since you've been using Access, maybe you can help me with a technical question. I've used Access for other applications where the record layout is consistent, but am leary of using it for the directory because of the oddball situations we have to accomodate.

How do you handle the kid who has two addresses (divorced parents), or really long surnames that don't fit into the field, or two or three phone numbers? Is the data keyed by parent name or student name? Our directory data ends up in Publisher where the chair makes all the oddball customizations. It's been my experience that Access is awesome for standard record layouts, but not so accomodating as word, excel or even publisher when it comes to inconsistencies.

I suppose my questions might be answered by looking at your database. My email is gcforhanATjunoDOTcom. Thanks!

Ok, databases should be in your in-boxes by the time you read this.
