Dad Event for Book Fair

Our school also does breakfast in the mornings. When we do our special bookfair things we just let the cafeteria know well in advance of the event so they'll know what to expect or what not to. For our fall bookfair we did Donuts for Dads one morning and Muffins for Moms the next. For our spring bookfair we did those two again and added Goodies for Grandparents. All three mornings were awesome! We had major turnout for all three. What also helped us tremendously was the fact that our teachers and principal are the ones that provided the goodies for all three mornings. They posted a sign-up sheet in the teachers lounge and signed up for the different days. And yes, we always run over time when we do these, but everyone is really good about it because it's bringing the parents into the school to participate in something with their child and the kids get such a kick out of having their family members (especially dads) come and do things with them.
Best of luck!

Thanks, Shelly, we'll give it another try this year and see how it goes.

Could someone explain to me how it is possible to get an "overwhelming response" to Donuts with Dads/Muffins with Moms AFTER breakfast is served in the cafeteria?

HMMM...NOT SURE I CAN ANSWER THIS ONE, AS OUR SCHOOL DOESN'T SERVE BREAKFAST.

When our school(500+ kids) had Donuts with Dads, we ran out of donuts 3 times (even though we asked for RSVPs), and were constantly running to buy more!!

ERHAPS NOW THAT YOU KNOW HOW MANY TO EXPECT, YOU COULD START WITH A MUCH LARGER QUANTITY. I'D PUT A SIGN UP THAT SAYS "LIMIT 1" OR WHATEVER YOUR LIMIT IS, BECAUSE SOME KIDS WOULD TAKE 4 OR 5, IF ALLOWED.

We also ran way over our allotted time, and the principal was not happy.
WHAT TIME DID YOU START THE EVENT? PERHAPS, COULD YOU DIVIDE UP THE EVENT AND HAVE K-2ND ON ONE DAY AND 3RD-5TH ON ANOTHER?

arking was a major problem--the teachers were upset cause there was no place to park when they arrived for class!!

WE HAVE THAT PROBLEM, TOO, WHEN PARENTS ARE INVITED TO THE SCHOOL. TRAFFIC IS OVERWHELMING. FOR THE TEACHERS, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PUT ORANGE CONES IN THE PARKING LOT, RESERVING THEIR PLACES? FOR OUR GRANDPARENTS DAY, WE USED A CHURCH PARKING LOT ONE BLOCK AWAY AND HAD TO RENT A SHUTTLE BUS TO FERRY PEOPLE BACK AND FORTH. IT WAS A VERY BIG EXPENSE, THOUGH.

We also had a problem with how to limit the amount of donuts one should take.

IKE I SAID, I'D HAVE TO PUT A SIGN UP OR SOMETHING. SOME KIDS WILL EAT AS MANY AS YOU'LL LET THEM HAVE!

Needless to say, we haven't tried it again, and in fact, had to cancel our Muffins with Moms event.
Anyone know how to deal with these problems in case we attempt this again?

I THINK YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO THINK REAL HARD ON "LOGISTICS" TO FIGURE THIS OUT. START THE EVENT EARLIER AND THEN PERHAPS ASK THE PRINCIPAL TO CONSIDER CUTTING A LITTLE SLACK, IF THE KIDS ARE 10 OR 15 MINUTES LATE.

The only positive thing was we received enough in donations from dads to cover our expenses.
Maybe it was a good thing that we didn't hold Muffins with Moms... I heard it said that moms are not nearly as generous--is this true?
NOT SURE ABOUT THAT!!!

GOOD LUCK!

We had "Donuts With Dad" and "Muffins With Mom" this year. Both were held immediately following the Cafeteria serving Breakfast! There was an OVERWHELMING turnout for both events. The teachers supported this & allowed kids to be out of class for an hour or so to be with Dad/Mom. (some of the teachers had a child there)

They also had 2 Digital Cameras set up & took pics of Kids/parents. Charged $5/each for them & gave them to the kids by that afternoon or the next day!!

Along with Shawn's idea you could take pic of Dad and child. Using a digital camera or even a poloroid. My youngest son got his picture taken with dad (with the badge maker we use for events)and he loved it.
