School Bus Drivers - Disregarding rules of the road

19 years 2 months ago #72738 by C. Brooks
Parent pickups leave at the same time as the busses? Hmm. I'd definately get a group together to talk to the supervisors of the bus. Could the board of education and the police dept. not work together? This sounds like a very dangerous situation. I would talk to all the powers that be in this situation. I am sure you wouldn't have a hard time finding other parents and citizens to back you.

I have issues with the bus drivers at our school. In the afternoon, about 10 busses or so, exit the school driveway. They all want to turn left. It is busy that time of day. But anyone pulling out of a private driveway is supposed to wait until traffic is clear. These busses are loaded with kids.

The bus drivers have a game going, by the way it all looks to me. They have radios to communicate with each other. School busses on the road, near this exit, will slow way down, and stop, in the middle of the road, to allow the busses to pull out onto the road. This is a busy road. Cars are also coming from the opposite direction. The busses pull out, knowing that that their co-worker bus driver has stopped traffic from one direction. But, as I said, there are cars coming from the opposite.

Sometimes, there are no busses on the road to stop traffic. The busses just pull out in front of cars, making that terible left turn in front of them, knowing that a sane person is gonna slam on their brakes to avoid a collision.

I keep seeing close calls. Including me. The last time the nasty bus driver did this to me, I think there was about 12 inches to spare from having the back of her bus bash in my car. Having a big honking yellow monster pull out left in front of you makes your blood pressure go to the moon! I see all the potential injury to me and my kids in my car, and to all the kids in the bus.

Why are bus drivers here so bull headed? They are carrying children, for gods'sake. They are pulling out of a driveway and not yielding to oncoming traffic.

Police have been told. This has been going on for 2 years that I know of. Police sit there if they have time, to watch. Then, the drivers are on their best behavior. No police in view, bam, back to their unsafe habits.

Is this normal and should I just live with it? Thank you.
