afterschool clubs for students

Our PTO started an after school Forgien Language Club... to head off some of the "babysitting" issues we charged $5 to join and $1 a week for dues.

We could tell right away that some kids didn't want to be there. They even said "My mom is making me come here." "I don't want to be in the club."

After a while they "weed" themselves out. We started with 60 kids, holding steady at 35-40 each week. Please note, that we took all submitted applications regardless...and we took their $5 too! The money has really been helpful. We are able to do ALOT of things like each week the kids do a Spanish craft, have a spanish snack, etc. WE even had Game Day and purchased Spanish Monolopy, and other english games which they counted the numbers and colors in spanish. Like Trouble/Candyland, etc. Anyway, each week we pick up another $35-$40 with the $1 dues!!

On another note,,, two teachers decided to have a Science Club. There is no cost to join, no dues. They got alot of response and they put everyone names in a jar/hat and had a drawing to see who could be in the club and they limited the number to a very small amount, I think 20 students.

I have my opinions on the lottery, I think it's a sure why to have a club fail... but whatever!

Hope this helps.

I'd love to see this at our school. We've had MAJOR cutbacks in our ESS program and we lost a grant this year that had paid for some enrichment programs.

I would put just that. Are they teacher referred clubs? I think I would state that late pick-ups and behavioral problems could result in loss of Club privileges. How will your program be ran? That may help with how to construct an info letter.

I am trying to start some afterschool clubs for the students and need some help on a letter to send out to parents. How do you, in a subtle way let the parents know that this is not going to be a babysitting service and children must be picked up on time. Thanks for any help.
