I can understand and see the nut allergy, I am allergic to seafood (mainly shrimp) and nearly lost my life in home ec class after being "forced" to try another students dip. I landed in the hospital overnight.

Sorry, I don't think anyone is overreating. Yeah, it sucks but nothing is scarier like that ambulance ride.....nothing.

I have a son with a peanut allergy and I would not in a million years ask someone to cancel the bake sale because of my son! He knows to ask if it has peanuts(he's 6)or nuts. We have several children who are diabetic at our school and when the children are able to buy ice cream after lunch (twice a week) one child's mom just keeps her child's special ice cream in the freezer at the school. My only request regarding my son's allergy is to maybe keep him away from an ooozing peanut butter sandwich at lunchtime.

My opinion....I would not do away with a bake sale for two parents who have issues. I would try and do my best to have a few items that the children in question can purchase. I would make sure I had a list of their names at the table so whomever is manning the table will know that these children cannot buy whatever they want. What about purchasing 7 small toy items that those children can get...hell I would give them to them for free and try to make them feel special by being the only kids to get a toy,

The fact that these kids have allergies stinks and it is really terrible that one has diabetes.
But this is a fact of life for these kids and nothing is going to change that. They will all go their entire lives not being able to eat whatever they please. They face this every day of their lives now. Do these parents not allow their children to attend birthday parties because there will be cake there or other items they may not be able to have?

Yes it stinks for them and yes I feel bad for them, but I could not take something away from all the other children over 2 parents with issues.
Hell, no matter what you do someone will always have an issue.

We are facing increasing pressure from a small (maybe 1 or 2 parents in a school of 500 students) to do away with our annual bake sale. The parent's issue is that there is nothing for her son to purchase at the bake sale that is "safe" for her son to eat. In the past, we have had a "nut/allergy" free table (which this particular parent has run). At this table we have the parents of the children with food allergies (total 7 in our school) bake treats for their kids which they know are safe. This seems to have worked until this year.

We also have one parent of a diabetic child requesting that we do away with the bake sale because her son will not purchase from the sugar free desserts that we offer and what he does purchase, he eats on the bus on the way home so the parent doesn't know.

Are other schools having these issues? And, how are you handling them?
