Do you pay for field trips?

19 years 10 months ago #71626 by Critter
Our K-1 school's PTO pays for field trip transportation. If there's an additional cost, the parents are aked to pay.

At the 2-5 school, too many students for our budget. This year, though, the principal wants to send all 720 kids on a special field trip. I suspect the PTO will be asked to supplement that cost if our fundraiser goes over.

We just had our first ever budget meeting this morning. With input from the principal we have calculated that we need $25,000 for the school year to cover field trips for our whole school (K-6) and approximately 1000 kids. We have been told that if we did not pay for field trips that they would not be able to go. The money comes from our school wide fundraisers. Each teacher also has their own classroom account that they can use as they wish. We gifted all 45 teachers $150 each. They also receive their Scrip, boxtops and carnival monies.

Our PTO pays for the entire class trip for each grade. We typically pay up to $10 a child, but in some cases we have paid more.

Our SBDM pays for field trips. Our FRC pays for the kids that can't pay if there is any cost to the students.

We budget $250 for each of our classes (24 classes total) for field trips. Any expenses over that amount must be paid for by parents in the class.

In our schools, grades k-5 go on 1-2 trips per year and the parents pay for it (including transportation services). Grades 6-8 go on one trip. In some cases, grants are requested for special trips from us. For example transportation to a music festival for the music students and transportation funds for an anti-drug and alcohol club's reunion with the other branches of the state. Last year we had two grade requests to help fund transportation. I see this as a new trend as transportation costs escalate and parents can not afford such high costs for class trips.
