SCHOOL LOGO/MASCOT--question about "changing"

20 years 2 months ago #70885 by kmamom
Hey--I get tapped out too sometimes!!

We actually were thinking about asking the principal to open it up to the kids in the school--some of them are pretty talented, and I think they could come up with some good ideas.

Myself, my VP and some others dispair at the lack of school spirit in our school. We feel like we're banging our heads on a wall trying to get "certain people" to open up and HAVE SOME FUN.It bothersome to me that for some reason the vocal MINORITY of "pee on parade" types seem to get their way over those who are willing to institute change.

Use the high school art department. Ask them to get the kids involved to re-vamp the logo. Maybe make it a contest and give out a boombox as the prize.

Kma- you surprise me, you are usually the creative one!

We don't want to get rid of the mascot (it's got a gigantic presence on the front of our school), BUT we wanted to make a more friendly/fun version for our t-shirts and sweats. Give it some personality. As we have BOXES of the original, older t-shirt still laying around from the past three years(we suggested using them as prizes/give aways etcetera, but you know some people can be), it obviously wasn't a winner in this round of fundraising. A bunch of us felt the t-shirt/sweats idea as a morale booster was a great one, WITH A NEW DESIGN. Some of the "old guard" has a thing about MOVING ON and putting things behind you, and trying to make the next attempt at something better, rather than just saying "it doesn't work."

The Senior class in 2001 picked out the mascot for the school and I honestly HATE it! Our mascot is a timberwolf...and the picutre or art work that they use makes it a really "scary" looking animal. Not really something you can put on a 5-6 year old's shirt.
Now this year the Seniors used a "nicer" more friendly looking timberwolf with great success. The irony here is a brother and sister of the 2001 class and 2004 class helped make the decisions! Mom is really fun about it (she likes the new t-shirts).

Our school t-shirts with different themes or designs and it works well. These are often offered during registration for school and do well. A popular one, PCS Pride with lettering in red, white and blue.

I can see both sides of this. There is the sense of tradition and holding onto your school's heritage but there is also the desire to move up with the times and make your mascot more appealing. How many years have you had this other mascot? Are we talking a few years or decades? Can you keep the mascot and give it "a friend"? Can you just update the image without changing the mascot?
Remember, what's hip now, may not be hip five years from now so will it need to be changed again? Is the current mascot more timeless?
It would seem like a simple situation but people's memories may be tied to this, it could be emotional.
Perhaps keep the mascot and add the alternative wording to jazz it up.
To be honest, I would probably be the one that would be against it because of the emotional tie to the history of it.
What exactly will it accomplish if you change it? Is it really worth it?

It's just for our school. We want to jazz it up, make it a little bit hipper and more fun to wear.
