Target Stores participate in Read Across America each year. Target Team Members read books to children in the store and they also go out to an area school or schools. Usually there are Read Across Amercia / Dr. Suess stickers, book marks, pencils or other items that they bring with them as well. If you have a Target in your community you may wish to contact them to see if they have decided which school they will visit.

We did Read Across America two years ago. We gave out "Book Worms" (gummy worms) for completed reading logs and had a map in the quad that charted our progress.
The event completed with a pajama party in the evening of Dr. Seuss' birthday, with a birthday cake and drinks. Everyone was asked to bring their favorite Dr. Seuss book, a blanket and pillows and our librarian dressed as the Cat in the Hat. We had a table with crayons, scissors and activities (downloaded from the websites listed above) and there was a reading group in the back.
We had pictures of the teachers as kids, their favorite Dr. Seuss book and a memory (in their words) associated to Dr. Seuss on display.
The gym was packed! It went over really well.

Hi...last year was our first year of celebrating this. We had Seuss Trivia all over the school with quotes from books, the kids had to guess what book it came from, then they could lift up a flap with the anwser. We had a theme week based on his books example we did Wacky Wednesday (dress as wacky as possible) hat day (500 hats for bartholomew cubbins), Be nice to others day based on thidwick the big hearted moose, a tshirt day based on oh the places you'll go(wear a shirt from somewhere you have been or want to be), etc. The kids and staff had so much fun. We had local celebrities come in to read so each class had a reader. We did a contest guessing how many books are there in the media center. We also did a use book exchange. This year we will do all that plus each student will receive from our group a bookmark and cat in the hat pencil. Our halls will be decorated with decorations from his books...i like to be creative..ha ha ha. It is such a great week and our total cost last year was under $150.00, the staff is already asking about it this year!!

There is website for National Read Across America. Our Title I gives out stickers, one year I ordered a shirt and got a pin. We have many readers to come to each elementary and our pre-k.

We have a door decorating contest and last year my VP and I did a bullentin board at the front of the school. I think I have pics of that.

The Cat in the Hat (our former parent liason) always reads a Dr. Suess book at an assembly. There is a Dr. Suess book about growing old our Principal read at our PTO meeting last year. It is a hoot, and I can never remember the name. We also have Green Eggs and Ham for lunch.

This year, I hope it is not overlooked like so many of our other events has been thus far. It is the 100th Birthday of Ted Giesel, Dr. Suess himself.

I got an insert from Child magazine that has 3 months of events and when the celebration is coming "to a town near you". It is neat.

You can go to www.seussentennial.com or www.suesville.com for more ideas. I thin that the website for RAA is www.readacrossamerica.org. Also www.nea.org may have something about it.

Happy planning.

Those Cat in the Hat hats are popular. Maybe have a crazy hat day. Or let everyone dress up in their own made-up Dr. Seussian character.
