No a principal can not close down your PTO. What they can do is ask your organizaiton not to meet on campus, deny you direct access to the kids for your flyers, refuse the items you try ot give them like the playground, etc. In other words the school does not have to accept your activities on behalf of them. I certainly hope you all are not faced with this possibility.
Thank you all for your input! Our by-laws state nothing about taking a vote if we go over an amount that was already disgust. this matter ws not on the budget plans for this year either. The school also knew that the fundraiser money for this year would go to the playground first and then to another project.
We've had to make those executive decisions before. I hated doing it that way but when your in a bind... At least you didn't decide it by yourself. You just need to make a minute of that executive meeting and present it at your meeting. If this person has been a problem in the past the general members that work so hard to make that money would probably prefer that she wouldn't be in charge of anything anymore.
have to agree... we have to wait until a general meeting(every month) to discuss anything that is over 150.00. If it has to be before then, I try to contact every person on our volunteer list, get their input.I save any emails with correspondance about the issue.That way I am covering my butt. I am fornuante that 95% of our group has email. If it is one sided then it goes that way. If i feel that it could be close then we have to meet. i can't say this happens hardly at all.i realize the urgency in your decision but i know from experience that even little things could backfire.

Depends on your bylaws. Our board isn't allowed to spend over $200 without a general meeting vote. I realize you were in a bind, and waiting would have cost you more $. Perhaps an emergency meeting would have worked?
I need help! i have a parent that will not leave anyone alone,not even the school board. She means well and does a great job with the events that she has chaired but, she doesn't want to follow the guide lines that we give her. When we give them to her she rebels and makes our life he**. At this time her thing is that we went over the amount that we said our playground would cost by 5,000.00. Money that we raised for the project was from last years fundraiser and then part of this years fundraiser was to go as well. The baord voted by phone to add the 5,000.00 so we would not be charged more money in the spring. We had to make a discion on it fast and the next PTO meeting wasn't for another three weeks. Were we wrong in doing that? Can the board vote without the whole PTO? the board is Prs. v.p. Sec. tres. and five grade level reps and a teacher rep. and Princpal.
