I'd be curious to know --before they converted to a PTA back in Oct..Whose tax id# were they using before the conversion...Did they have their own, or were they using the school's? second--Did they have their own bank account with their own federal Id# for the IRS or were they using the the schools account..If they raised 80 grand in fundraising alone i would imagine that a 990 was filled out for that group. If they were using the schools tax id # and bank acounts then really the school did have control over hte money- the parent group was actually doing the coordination of the work and making donations to the school--If this was the case--but if they had their own tax id# and bank account then the school would not have hte right to hte money.

I'd be hesitant to jump to any judgements on this - it's probably not a black or white situation.

Another story mentions that the group failed to deliver its bylaws to the Board until December, a part of being recognized and quotes another parent group member who isn't quite as thrilled about the switch or the way it was done.

I'm not saying who's wrong or right here, just suggesting there's a lot more going on than the one article tells us.

WOW!!! I can't believe what I just read. Everyday, I check out this sites "latest news" stories and usually find an interesting article that someone has found pertaining to parent groups. Todays article absolutly floored me! For those of you who missed it, this is the link

What is that school board thinking? They have no claim to any money raised by the parent group, whether its a PTA, PTO, HSA, or PTG. I think the board heard that this groups last fundraiser netted $80,000 and thought that maybe the district was somehow entitled to it. I think not! I feel that if there were truly a problem with these parents, the board would have acted way before they switched to PTA. Something is not right here. Would love to hear other takes on this.
