Schools affected by Attacks

We are in FL and our elementary school is collecting for the Police and Fire Fighters. We have collection jugs (empty gallon jugs) in every room,in the office,at the book fair and someone canvasses the pickup line after school. Once we are done collecting money it will be given to our local Police/Fire Station and they will forward it to where it needs to go.I don't know if we contacted them or they contacted us,but this to be the simplest way to do it.

No, we are in Michigan. I feel the same way. Our Student Council will be doing a collection drive. But I have to speak with the Advisor to see who they will be giving the money to. Our PTO would like to help out by matching whatever they collect but I would like to know who they will be giving to. I know that one elementary school (we have 3) is giving to the Red Cross and the Middle School is giving to the United Way. I would like to give to the Salvation Army but being a public school I don't think they would allow us because that would be like supporting a religious organization (which to me is sad). I spoke to my husband about this and the PTO Pres and they both feel that giving directly to the NYC Fire Fighters or to the children of the victims (non-emergency personel)would be a good idea. Or what about the EMT's that lost their lives? I don't know which department they would fall into. Check Helping.org they have some info on who you can give to but make sure 100% of it will go directly to help those who need it.

Has anyone thought about once this war is well under way, will people be as generous? I hope so, their families will need our help too.

Was your school district in one of the attack areas??

So many radio stations and groups here in the midwest are collecting BIG money for the victims in New York. One of the big fund raisers here is the United Way. Our local United Way has already collected over $850,000!!

I'm hesitant to give, as there seems to be no focus as to exactly where this money is going to except the "victims of NYC". It's just too vague for my liking.

Using this terrific forum, would it be appropriate for an affected PTO/PTA to solicit a "sister" school somewhere else in the US or in their home state for additional funds?

As a consumer, I would be more apt to give a cash donation if I knew exactly where the money was going.

your thoughts?? anyone??
