Urban Legends and Computer Viruses

22 years 9 months ago #68550 by JHB
This is a bit off topic, but as someone who works in the technology field, I urge all of you to be aware of the many, many email hoaxes(urban legends) and computer viruses at large.

Regarding viruses, keep a current virus protection program on your computer.

As far as urban legends, there are thousands floating around. The recent 9/11 tragedies will unfortunately give rise to many more. These are chain letter emails telling you about children with terminal illnesses, products that aren't safe, bugs found in major food chains, fundraising ventures, etc. Many are seemingly compelling human interest stories and most urge you to "pass on the information" to others. Don't. Most are frauds and simply waste time and take up space and bandwidth, adversely affecting network performance. Some actually cause financial loss to organizations' whose reputations are harmed.

Urban legends ARE actually pretty facinating. We're already seeing ones about "Faces in the Smoke of the World Trade Center" and "Nostradamus predicted the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center". Feel free to go to one of the security sites and read to your hearts' content. Many of these have keyword searches so you can check on new emails you get. But don't share them and worsen the problem.

Here are some good sites: www.urbanlegends.com/ www.f-secure.com/news/hoax/

Take care!
