When starting a new PTO (or reviving a dormant one), we all encounter the which-came-first-the-chicken-or-egg scenario. Often a group of officers just "evolve" because there's not formal enough a group to vote them in. But if they weren't elected, are they really officers?

Just go with what works. If the officers are in place and no one is making a big fuss, focus on programs and move forward, developing your organization as you go. If you are facing issues with the parents not feeling they had a voice in the decision - then, stop, hold a general election and get everything formalized.

mandyg,

We are unsure what you are wanting to vote about. Do you want to vote about you being the president of the PTO?

We had out first meeting led by the principal. That was they led us in a vote. Sometimes a vote can be informal, sometimes it is formal.

Informal votes work well when there are not too many people present and there is only on person that wants to be president, one person that wants to be vice president, and so forth.

Did you all have a time when the VP said does anyone want to be president of the PTO? Were you the only one that raised you hand? Did the VP acknowledge you as the President? If so, then you've already had an informal vote.

Our first meeting was difficult too, because everyone there didn't know what it meant to be PTO president. No one wanted to volunter. The next year, it went more smoothly, because I went in knowing I wanted to do it and was willing to "take charge"".

Sorry If I misunderstood what you were looking to learn.
