Either way, field day or another event, you will end up doing it. Think about what the kids would like. Do they look forward to this? Is it considered a tradition in the school? If you release a memo stating that volunteers are needed for field day or it will be reduced to a small portion of the usual day of events, it may get people to contact you. I have found that I can get a lot of volunteers that will show up and do what they need to do, but ask them to come to the school for a meeting--no way. Too Busy or Too Tired.

If you don't have parents there to help, but have the support of your gym teachers, scale it down for the day to some fun races or games for the kids and lunch. Call in the local ice cream truck for a choice of ice cream sandwich or another item and then call it a day!

How about a picnic... or a carnival... you could get some HS kids to come run things with you! It is alot of work though!
Another thought is Movie night or a dance...

Our PTO has Field Day at the end of every school year. The same format has been followed for over 10 years, so this year we are revamping the whole day. However, no one comes to our Field Day Planning Committee meetings. We have 1 parent that shows up, as well as the PTO VP, PTO Secretary, and I am the PTO President. Quite frankly, we are all exhausted. The three of us have done all of the work for the entire school year, and we need a break.

My question is this. If we decide to cancel Field Day, what other fun alternative could we have for our students?
