If you decide that you do need some extra help, I suggest looking to your parents befroe you pay big bucks. We have an awesome CPA dad who is helping us tremendously. (It helps that he is the husband of one of our board members!)

Pflagship Joy - before you enlist an attorney, I suggest your PTO purchase the PTO Today startup guide (about $40 from this site). It will educate you on every nuance of formalizing your group, including walking you thru, item by item, the official IRS application for 501c3. It's written specifically for PTOers so it should be pretty easy to understand. Even if you pursue getting professional advice, you will be WAY ahead of the learning curve when you talk to the professional if you've read thru the guide first. And you might even realize, like many of us have, that we can actually do all the paperwork and filings ourselves.
