Principal Wants to end the PTO

18 years 3 months ago #66660 by mich-in-braz
The truth of the matter is this: Without the principal's support, PTO's are not productive or efficient. No matter what the name of the group is, the principal has some kind of control over the group - even if that is just to support or discourage certain activities.

Your principal may have a good idea, sometimes re-organizing a group helps us to focus on what we really want the group to be about. I know that sometimes we do the same old things just because we've always done them. Talk to him and see what his reasons are before you jump to conclusions. Maybe he just wants to re-vamp and you might be able to do that without disbanding and creating a new group altogether.

Well, first if you haven't already spoken to him to find out exactly why he wants to do this you should. Is it simply because he wants to control the group or have their been ongoing problems/issues that have prompted his wanting to do this?

All you can really do is rally your group and parents to attend a BOE meeting. You would need to present your case to the BOE and Superintendent. If they side with you they will tell the principal he cannot do it. If they side
with the principal they can put you out of the school. I do not know how your group is established, but most PTO's are independent groups from the school which opperate within the school. So normally as a seperate entity they do not have the right to disband you, but the do have the right to refuse to allow you to operate within the school building. Also, any parents who feel strongly about this who cannot attend the BOE meeting should send letters regarding this matter to the BOE. Ultimately there is power in numbers so the more folks you get to go and send letters the better off you will be. Good Luck!

Our Principal wants to end our PTO and create a Parent Teacher Network under his supervision instead. What can or should we do to stop this? Help Please!
