Well if you understand all the bylaws and you know how to go about changing the current situation-go for it. If other parents are complaining and their willing to back you up with your ideas, even better. Just know this-as all parental volunteer commitees/boards know-People all sound great in a crowd, but we are truly looking for results. Individuals who truly talk the talk and walk the walk. I am not talking about you, I am talking about all of the people you are talking about who say that your school situation needs change. Make sure their on-board and willing to truly help you to make a change. Good luck and here's hoping you can have a positive affect on your school.

It sounds like you have been getting plenty of input so gaining support for an office shouldn't be that much harder. Starting over wouldn't be the solution. You need to remember that in any volunteer organization, you are going to get the occasional jerks. You need to affect change from within and if you are up for it, announce your intentions to run. Prepare a resume and start encouraging people to join so that when the time comes, they can vote. You could start brand new but at some point, some other jerk will wiggle in there and then what, do you do it all over again?
Good luck with whatever you decide and remember, don't let the b****** get you down!

Why start a new PTO when one is already established? It's costly, a lot of paperwork and time consuming. Run for office! Bylaws (even if they stink) are there to be implemented. If these people are as bad as they seem, you shouldn't have any trouble getting support.
Good Luck!

It's aready mid Feburary and your best bet would be to (if you are intrested) see who would like to run for an office next year. Let the Principal in on your plans and you may see support form that end too. Now I know what I am suggesting is not really that popular of an idea but if this "team"......is really bad ;) rock the vote! Just keep it positive and clean, follow the by-laws regarding campaining (some don't allow it), nominations, and elections.

Sometimes change is what a group needs to start over. May the force be with you!!

Thanks, Ive looked into bylaws (also not appropriate) and they have them but dont even use them. Most of the teachers Ive talked to so far sound eager to be supportive. All the parents Ive talked to would like to participate in a PTO program, but dont want to be involved in what is presently exsistant. There have been alot of complaints from parents about present PTO. I have experience with business incorp. legals (am CEO of a millwork corp) and am familliar with writing bylaws, but have never founded a new PTO. I will be attending the parent conf. in April to learn more and this site is fabulous. I know from experience though, what can happen reguarless, when people feel there toes have been stepped on . that is not my intetion, but I dont see a reason to sit in silence for a circle of nothingness.

As I am now learning that you must first go to your Bylaws and read them carefully. They can either make you or break you. They should discribe each position, their responsibilities, and requirements. Be sure that you have factual documentaion at all times to back up your concerns. Hope this helps a little!!!
