automatic detention for forgotten homework

21 years 7 months ago #64000 by KC Swan
Our middle school started something like this. I think the name they finally settled on was "ZAP", for Zeros Aren't Permitted. A ZAPped student stays after school to work on the missed homework, and takes the late bus home, but a student can only get ZAPped if the parents have signed off on it. My understanding is that there is a team of teachers present, ready to answer questions and assist with difficulties.

I believe the original plan was for ZAP to be mandatory for all students, and the name choice reflects that. They were also talking about calling it "ACT" for Assignments Completed Today, which strikes me as a much better name for the program they actually put in place.

Dear Helpful hints mom,
We are in Ohio. The thing about the detentions are that they are before school starts in the moring. Most of the forgotten homework has been done at home the evening before. We have a homework helpers which is after school for kids that want a teachers help. This is not what the detention is. It is truly a detention where they have to write several times(I think 25 times) I will not forget my homework or I will do my homework or something like that.
It's hurting the kids self-confidance. Everyone forgets now and then even adults.
Thanks for your responds,

Copymom,
Are you in Texas (Stafford) has the zero tolerance. They say it's because homework should be done no matter what. They send the kids to detention (it's a room with a teacher that assist them in getting it done) and also in the after school detention for the one's that need help with homework. I told them they need to call it something else instead of "detention" because that lowers the kids moral, confidence, etc.,etc.. The word detention just sounds so awful for just forgetting homework.

our school started a homework club for those kids who had problems getting their homework completed or forgetting it. it is held by a teacher after school - they rotate. The student can be recommended to attend by either a parent or a teacher. for those students who still have problems with this, they have to stay in at recess and/or lunch until their homework is completed. the thinking is that if they aren't getting their homework done, they are playing afterschool and so they can miss out on the playing during recess and lunch. i think the detention for forgotten work, unless it is a chronic problem is a bit harsh. what grade level are you talking about? do you have any other kind of demerit or reward system in place?
we reward our kids with demerit free activities such as movies and popcorn. it works pretty well. might be something to suggest - kids will remember alot for an icecream or popcorn or a movie.

OUR SCHOOL THIS YEAR PUT A NEW TWIST ON ZERO TOLERANCE. THEY NOW HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR ACADEMICS. THE KIDS ARE NOT GIVEN A WARNING OR A SECOND CHANCE WHEN THEY FORGET THEIR HOMEWORK.
THEY SIMPLY HAVE A 30MIN. DETENTION THE NEXT DAY.
I THINK THEY ARE HOPING THAT THIS WILL BRING THE ACADEMIC SCORES UP. BUT, IT ACTUALLY IS STARTING TO MESS WITH THE KIDS SELF-CONFIDENCE.

I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INPUT THAT YOU MAY HAVE.
THESE ARE GOOD KIDS AND IT'S REALLY BRING THEM DOWN.
THANKS,
