Listing Students By Name at the elementary school level...

21 years 10 months ago #63616 by Kidd
We are pre-k through 5th grade and we do a directory called the "Buzz Book" each year that does list class lists and each child's name, address and phone. There is a form that the parent fills out at registration and they put in whatever info they want in the directory. I use my list ALL the time! Our bus drivers get them also in case they have trouble getting a child home. I agree though with everything happening right now that it doesn't sound very safe.

I also agree about the safety issue- however for PTO, Girl Scouts, volunteers, etc I would be lost without it!! The kids also love it- its like their own personal phone book!!!
I guess you can never be too careful, but then again what kind of life would we lead if we let the weirdos dictate what we can and can't do??? We simply have to be careful and use the directory as intended. Keep it at home. At our school everyone has the option of saying they do not want their info published- I think in total out of 450 kids we maybe get 8-10 that opt out.
So far- knock on wood- we haven't had any problems!!! :D

That is a good point I have often wondered the same thing. The other elem. school in our district no longer post class lists with the fear of a abductor/ or non custiodal parents reading the list & finding the child. Our school however still post the class list! Last year my daughters 1st grade teacher did a class directory, for things like play dtes, b.day partys. It included name, phone numbers, & address. Each parent had to sign a release to have their info. included! only 2 in the class of 20 did not sign (those 2 happened to be flaky parents that just never took the time to read & returne the form, one had no phone!) I don't like the idea of a whole school directory, our world is scary today, I don't want everyone knowing all my childs info. And I know our school can not give any phone numbers out no matter what!!

Hmmm, I've been chewing over this one for a while. MetzyMom, I definitely agree that the safety issue is the most important one. I'm just trying to think what I would do without my directory, not just for PTSO work, but also playdates, birthday party invites, etc.

Every time I read the prior posting about student handbooks, or any posting where there is some sort of book/directory that lists the names, classes, etc. of children, I kinda get a creepy feeling. With so many children being abducted, especially recently, is it really wise to put out this kind of info? I know that our school really frowns on anything leaving the school with children's info on it only leaves by way of the shredder. Even basic info. The rule is if it has a child's name on it, and it wasn't homework or classwork (in other words, if it isn't going home to that child's parents/guardian), it goes in the shredder. I think it is okay to put out a directory of PTO members, but they're/we're adults. I think it is regular info used in high school year books, but is it really worth the risk at the elementary level? I'm not trying to be the voice of doom, I'm just curious. :(
