filing for an extention on taxes

17 years 8 months ago #62507 by JHB
The IRS site can be overwhelming if you don't know what you are looking for. It's a lot easier with a definite starting point (Form 990). That's what's so great about this site - we can all pool our experience and knowledge.

Good luck with the extension. It should be pretty straight forward, but come back if you have questions.

thanks!!

You don't know how many times I have been over the "list of forms" on the irs web site. I should probably have my eyes checked.

You'll be completing a version of a 990 for the annual IRS filing. Unless something is unusual about your PTO, it will be the 990EZ, the shorter version. From the 990/990EZ Instructions :

I. Extension of Time To File
Use Form 8868 to request an automatic 3-month extension of time to file. Use Form 8868 also to apply for an additional (not automatic) 3-month extension if the original 3 months was not enough time. To obtain this additional extension of time to file, you must show reasonable cause for the additional time requested. See the Instructions for Form 8868.

Just go to the IRS website ( www.irs.gov ) and download Form 8868 and its instructions. You'll pretty much just need to fill in the header (including your EIN.), check a couple boxes, and sign it. The initial request for an extension is automatic - no justification needed.

You do need to know which 990. Here's the basic criteria:

Gross Receipts < $25,000 - optional 990/990EZ filing
Receipts < $100,000: 990EZ
Receipts > $100,000 or Assets > $250,000: 990

As you can see, most PTOs probably fit the 990EZ category, whether they are filing voluntarily or because required.

why not call the 1800 nr for the IRS, 501c3 dept., and ask.
if you dont have their nr, enter IRS 501c3 contacts into your search engine, or call their main nr, and select non profit meunu, or ask to be connected there once you speak to a human being.

Can someone please help, it is tax time, our first year as a 5013c. We have a great volunteer who is our accountant, has been doing our audits etc. for as long as I remember. She has been quite ill lately. Taxes are due this month and she is not up for it. A couple of us took a look at went yuck!!!! she recommends us to file an extention and than she can whip thru them. I have been all over the irs web pages etc. and I cannot find the form for extentions. Is it the same form as an individual? (She is in the hospital now, and I really don't want to bother her about a (hopefully) simple form) My other option is to head off to the irs and spend a couple hours waiting. any help would be appreciated. thanks.
