PTO By-laws

We just went through and updated our by-laws. I think we ended up with 6 pages. We described all the positions, four officers and six coordinators. We listed our mission statement and purpose. You want to be very clear on who reports to whom, how elections are held and when. Better to nip a problem before it gets to be one! Go online and look at different schools and their by-laws. I got some good ideas on how ours should be written.

We just went thru the process of writing ours. We have 9 1/2 pages. We have all of the current necessary language needed for the purpose, conflict of interest, dissolution, etc., all within the bylaws for filing for Non-Profit.

We got very detailed with some of our information in the "formal" rules/Bylaws so that's why ours is longer than many. Our committee felt that it was better to have it within this document to get everyone to follow our procedures.

Other organizations are able to give the general standard statement in the bylaws and use Policy & Procedure "Manuals" to do the day to day how to's. This way it's sometimes easier to update and change what works for the group without the formal amendment procedure of changing bylaws.

Either way, I would think a one pager is probably VERY generic and it would be difficult to even have headings to cover the different sections to understand how your organization works.

How long are most by-laws? I am wondering if one page is enough or are most a "booklet" type?
