goofour ---- Who knows why some adults cant act like adults. The reasons are probably varied, but it certianly doesnt bring the solutions they hope to acheive, when they dont act their age, does it. Almost counterproductive at times.Good thing those parents (who cant act their age) put their kids in schools, and dont home-school!

"Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them. Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891

Thanks everyone,

It looks like I have some research to start. I beleive we are already incorporated and have the 501c3 status. I think the paperwork for the IL state tax has not been applied for. My first step - irs website to see if I can get copies of everything. And go from there.

Is there a link or a PTO blog with any general misc. or rules of being incorporated? I know you have to have certain requirements in you minutes etc.

Now i must vent - WHY CAN'T ADULTS ACT LIKE ADULTS, Do they have to act like 2nd graders? My co president said it best "How can we expect our children to behave and get along when the Mommies can't play nice"

Hope everyone enjoys their summer!

You got me thinking and yes, in Michigan, it looks like our incorporation application didn't ask for our federal EIN. We did get a 999999 state id number, but I've only seen it referenced on the incorporation renewal paperwork. We happened to get our EIN months before we applied for incorporation, since we needed the EIN to open our own bank account. Anyway, since our state doesn't ask for the EIN when you incorporate, it looks like you could do either step first. But rules vary from state to state.

In any event, be sure to incorporate (regardless of your state) BEFORE you apply for your 501c3 since your incorporation defines a new organization in the IRS's eyes. If you want to incorporate AFTER you get your 501c3, the IRS says you're a brand new org and you must file for 501c3 again.

Critter,

I did the inc. first and then the EIN for another organization (and currently for our PTO) We did not have an EIN when we filed. The number that is the filing number with the State of Michigan is not the EIN. The format of the number you get for filing is ###-###.

Once I receive the filing for inc., then I do the SS4.

Does the "letter of incorporation" mean you are already incorporated in your state? If so, you probably already have a federal EIN from the IRS. It's a number like this: 99-9999999. I'm not in Illinois, but in Michigan, we don't get a separate id number upon incorporation. Well, technically we do get one on our incorporation form, but I've never used it. The federal EIN is THE id number. Maybe in Illinois you have to apply for a special state number. Incorporation is a state issue, so there are 50 different set of rules.

By the way, if she won't give you a copy of the Articles of Incorporation with the State filing, you probably can find them on the IL state site. I know that in Michigan you can do a business lookup and get a copy of them.
